Things to Do in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend
Where you live on the coast decides what’s in your backyard. You might want a 10-minute drive to the beach, a boat ramp at the end of the street, or a quick trip to museums and restaurants. Here are the area’s top attractions and the closest neighborhoods. If you’re still deciding on an area, start with our guide to choosing where to live.
Padre Island National Seashore
The Padre Island National Seashore is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. It protects about 70 miles of beach, dunes, and tidal flats between the Gulf and the Laguna Madre, a rare hypersaline lagoon. It is a nesting ground for the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and a major stop for migrating birds, with hundreds of species recorded.
Live nearby: North Padre Island puts the Seashore minutes from your door. See Moving to North Padre Island.
Mustang Island State Park
Mustang Island State Park covers about five miles of Gulf beach between Padre Island and Port Aransas. Visitors surf-fish, camp on the beach, and paddle the bay-side kayak trail. Birding is best during the spring and fall migrations.
Live nearby: North Padre Island or Port Aransas.
Port Aransas
“Port A” is a beach town with a fishing village core: charter boats, jetty fishing, golf carts, kiteboarding, and casual seafood spots. Find events and businesses through the Port Aransas Chamber.
Live nearby: Beach condos, island homes and vacation-rental properties. Browse Port Aransas homes, and check the local short-term rental rules before you buy.
Texas State Aquarium
The Texas State Aquarium on North Beach offers dolphin and shark exhibits, animal encounters, and a wildlife rescue center that treats injured sea turtles and birds.
USS Lexington Museum on the Bay
Across from the aquarium, the USS Lexington, a WWII Essex-class carrier, has been a museum since 1992. Visitors can explore its flight deck, hangar bay, and crew quarters. It is a fitting landmark for a city with deep naval aviation roots.
Live nearby: North Beach, Downtown, and the Bayfront put both museums close by. Military buyers can start with our Military Relocation guide.
